The last Great Auk in Great Britain (excluding St Kilda) was shot in Papa Westray in 1813 as a specimen for a London dealer. By 1844, the Great Auk was extinct.
this painting was purchased to mark the retiral of James A Troup, Hon Secretary, and Rognvald K Leonard, Hon Treasurer after service during the reconstruction of the museum 1994 - 2000.
