Ethnography

Pipebowl carved from argillite, a carbonacious shale. The Hadia people believed in a totemic relationship between men and animals, and this pipebowl, like much other art work from this region, is carved with highly stylised figures of men, animals and birds. A raven (the broken piece to the right), and in front of the bowl to the left a crouching figure of a shamen (priest or diviner) wearing a conical hat.
